Is CoolSculpting Right for You?
Cosmetic treatments that sculpt the body and reduce stubborn fat are incredibly popular in a world where a fit, toned physique is the top beauty standard. What’s more, many of the latest available procedures are completely non-invasive, which means that many clients can achieve a flatter belly or smoother thighs without the need for surgery and its accompanying downsides. CoolSculpting is one of the most well-known and well-studied of these non-surgical treatments; as it has quickly become a household name among cosmetics enthusiasts, it has established itself as an effective and versatile option for people who want to reduce stubborn pockets of body fat.
Since its first FDA approval in 2010, the original CoolSculpting device has undergone numerous improvements and clinical studies. It is currently approved to treat areas of fat including the hips, thighs, buttocks, back and chin — and, since it’s non-surgical, you can easily choose to repeat treatments or treat multiple areas for a fully sculpted effect.
CoolSculpting is popularly called a “fat freezing” treatment thanks to its unique cryolipolysis technology. Cryolipolysis is a scientific and medical term for the dissolving (lysis) of fat (lipo) using freezing temperatures (cryo). The principle was developed after doctors observed that children who ate cold foods like popsicles would sometimes exhibit irritation on their cheeks due to the freezing temperatures damaging cells in facial fat deposits. They noted that fat cells were more susceptible to damage from the cold than the skin and surrounding tissues, which led to the conclusion that this could be harnessed to freeze and remove adult fat in a targeted way. CoolSculpting is the result of these studies and efforts.
The CoolSculpting tool uses highly controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells without irritating the skin. It delivers freezing temperatures directly to fat tissues, which triggers natural processes in the body that remove the frozen cells. This approach eliminates the need for surgical intervention with precise, effective technology and without extra risks and downtime.
The Right Patient
The ideal CoolSculpting patient is in good physical shape but has defined areas of body fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise efforts. Common concerns include love handles, lower belly pooches or fullness under the chin. CoolSculpting is most effective for these concentrated areas of fat because of its targeted approach.
If your concerns are more widespread than this, it may not be the right treatment for you. It also cannot treat loose or stretched skin that might remain after drastic weight loss or pregnancy — if you are hoping to address concerns like this, a tummy tuck or lift surgery might be your best option. At Banff Plastic Surgery, you will need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Elizabeth Hall-Findlay to determine if your needs match the results that CoolSculpting can realistically deliver. It is our goal to ensure that you receive the best procedure to address your needs in a way that makes sense for you. If your concerns and expectations are a good fit for CoolSculpting, there are very few other restrictions on who can undergo this treatment. Since CoolSculpting is a simple, gentle procedure, it is appropriate for patients of many body types, ages and sensitivities. The device comes with several attachments of different shapes and sizes to optimize each patient’s treatment for their individual goals. And, since the procedure doesn’t require any recovery or downtime, it is a great option for people with busy schedules who cannot take days away from work or other responsibilities to rest.
The Right Procedure
The most important distinction we make when our patients consider CoolSculpting is that it is a fat reducing treatment, not a weight loss solution. If you are beginning or in the middle of a weight loss journey, we may advise you to get closer to your ideal weight before you choose a body contouring procedure like CoolSculpting. When you know exactly which areas of your body need to be treated with CoolSculpting, you can be confident that you will love your results and that you can achieve your aesthetic goals quickly and effectively.
An additional differentiating factor between CoolSculpting and other body sculpting treatments is that the effects of CoolSculpting take some time to fully appear. Since the procedure works with your body’s natural processes to reduce and eliminate fat, it typically takes about a month before your results are noticeable and up to three months until all improvements are apparent. Additionally, most clients choose to undergo two or three treatments per area for maximum results — this means that it could be several months until the changes you hope to make have fully settled. CoolSculpting patients consider the delay to be a very small price to pay to avoid the complexities of a surgical procedure, especially since the results are usually well worth the wait. But if you have a specific event or timeline in mind, you may want to talk to Dr. Hall-Findlay about other possible options.
As with any other procedure, it is important for patients to recognize that Coolsculpting does not always give the same results in similar patients. It can be disappointing if patients expect too much. Remember that it should only be used for small areas of extra fat and that it will not improve areas of loose skin.
The Right Reasons
At Banff Plastic Surgery, it is important to us that we understand your expectations and motivations before we recommend any of our treatments. We want you to be completely satisfied with your results, so we strive to connect each of our patients with a procedure that will accomplish exactly what they are hoping to achieve. So, while CoolSculpting is a versatile procedure that has a proven track record of success, we know that it is not right for everyone. If you want to lose weight or appear fit, it is important to understand that CoolSculpting is not a replacement for a diet and exercise routine.
However, it can be an excellent tool to complement a fitness regimen or boost motivation for working out. Too often, we encounter patients who have become frustrated with their bodies because they work hard to get in shape but don’t see the results they want. CoolSculpting can target the areas of stubborn fat that are causing this frustration, smoothing the areas of your body that are slow to respond to diet and exercise without any guesswork. We especially encourage you to ask us about CoolSculpting at your consultation with Dr. Hall-Findlay if you are looking to feel more confident about your body; you want to know that your fitness routine is working for you; or you are tired of awkward bulges of fat on a body you work hard to maintain.
The Right Time
Since CoolSculpting is non-invasive and repeatable, it does not have the same time considerations as many other procedures. You do not need to plan ahead for time away from work or help around the house, and the sessions only last about an hour per area so you don’t need to schedule a whole day for your treatment. You can also choose to undergo CoolSculpting more than once, so your life stage is less of a factor as well. For example, while we typically recommend that our tummy tuck clients wait until they are finished having children so they do not risk interfering with their results, with CoolSculpting this is less of a concern.
There are two main time constraints that we typically discuss with prospective CoolSculpting clients. First, it is important to remember that your results will take a few months to appear. If you are hoping to have a flatter belly or corrected love handles with less lead time, CoolSculpting may not be your best option at this point. The other factor is that many clients experience some swelling or discoloration for up to a week after their treatment. If you are hoping to treat larger or more visible areas, we always help keep you informed about the possibility of visible bruising while your body adjusts. For this reason, we typically recommend that you avoid scheduling your CoolSculpting session right before a vacation or event.
